I love experimenting and trying new food and drink. I saw cherry wine in our local convenience store of all places, I'd never heard of it. Apparently, there's a song about it. The cherry wine forms the basis of this recipe. I tried it standalone and it's quite nice but very sweet for my liking. I was thinking of ways to reduce the sweetness and it's almost Christmas here, so it's an appropriate time to enjoy mulled wine by an open fire. Sure you could even get some chestnuts roasting, marshmallows might be nicer :-)
Serves 4
Ingredients
4 bottles of cherry wine. You read that right, they are only little small ones, I'm not going to promote irresponsible consumption of alcohol, am I?
1 lemon sliced
3 pieces of cinnamon bark or cinnamon sticks
1 tsp of green cardamom pods
3 pieces of star anise
50g cherries
50g blackberries
50g blueberries
You could add some cloves or some juniper berries also.
Method
This is super easy. Throw everything into a pot. Bring to a simmer and reduce the liquid for a little. Give it about 10 minutes or so. Strain through a strainer into your glass (you will need a sturdy one, otherwise it might crack). Add some of the spices and fruit to garnish.
Wrap yourself around it and enjoy.
